Our driver Washington picked us up promptly at 8 am for our drive from Quito to Chugchilan and the Quilotoa loop area. It was a beautiful clear day so we were able to see Volcans Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana, and the mountains Los Ilinizas.
We arrived at Black Sheep Inn by noon and were shown our room, the composting banos, and the common areas. We settled in, were fed lunch, and promptly set out on the Sky Walk. There is no map per se, but rather a picture book with arrows and x’s. Along the way, we saw beautiful vistas, hiked amongst cows, sheep, and pigs, and several times were sorta chased by local dogs. We are at 10,000 feet, but good lord was it hot in the middle of the day. Now it’s cooling off considerably.
Back at the inn, the cutest little Andean couple is selling alpaca scarves, sweaters and little llama keychains. We chatted with them for awhile, with them being just as curious about us as we are of them.
Dinner is communal, family style, and provided with the room as Chugchilan is sorta in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and the American ambassador to Ecuador is here with his family (and troop of bodyguards complete with earpieces just like in the movies. I keep waiting for one of them to talk into their wrist.
Tomorrow the Laguna Quilatoa and hike back to the inn.
