Today we hopped on a bus from Split to Skradin, the small town which is the headwaters to Krka National Park. We arrived at 11 am and got directions to our hotel from a guy working the table for the upcoming referendum. Not sure what it’s for, but he said it was for Croatian citizens to get a better parliament. He accidentally told us to go in the wrong direction, then chased us down a block later to say he was wrong and to point us in the right direction. We checked into the hotel early, got picnic fixings from the grocery store and bought our entrance ticket to the park. 110 kuna to get in or $17.50. Kinda steep but worth it.
The entrance ticket from this entrance, (there are several) includes a 30 minute boat ride up the river to the main waterfall. We got off the boat seeking a quiet refuge and needed to put ourselves into check. There’s a lot of people here and it’s not exactly the quiet we are seeking. Making the best of our circumstances and realizing that ‘not busy’ in Europe is quite possibly different than ‘not busy’ in Colorado, we started out on the 2 km boardwalk path around the park.
It was amazing, beautiful and roaringly loud in a way only powerful water can be.
About halfway through, we came across another info desk and entrance area. We asked the woman working about hiking in the area. Looking at our Tevas, she was not impressed. Please, no, she said. Ok, fine, we’ll stick to the boardwalk.
We ended our hike with a dip in the pool. Rugged swimming hole our guidebook called it. Well, when in Rome, you take a dip in whatever’s there.
Nathan swam out to the rope… an exhausting swim against the current, but worth it to get closer to the falls.
Now, back in Skradin, we are trying to decide our next steps before we are required to be in Zagreb for our final few days.
