We arranged to go diving with Gooodive, a local PADI 5 star diving company, which just happens to be about 20 steps from our home here. Since this is our first dive vacation as certified divers, I wanted to go with a guide and company that would help us develop our skills and be patient that we are such baby divers.
Bob our guide took us to two dive sites, Something Special, which is just steps out the front door of the shop, and Angel City, which is further away by the airport. Bonaire is pretty unique in that the vast majority of their diving is shore diving, so you just suit up and walk into the water.
At Something Special, we saw a whole range of fish; 5 foot Tarpon, parrotfish, horse eyed jacks, French Angel fish, flounders, trumpetfish, cowfish, porcupine puffers and a whole host of things I can’t remember names for. Of course, Bob had showed us the hand signs for a bunch of fish as we were getting oriented, but mostly if he pointed at something, you just looked and watched till you saw it.
When we walked into Angel City, which is a double reef system, we were expecting mostly the same. He had said that we might see baby squid also, and we did. Then Bob was pointing at something which I didn’t see, and then holy shit, the largest, ugliest green moray eel is swimming just right under me! Keep breathing, don’t move, and don’t get eaten! The thing was easily 5 feet in length with a really thick body. I’m here to tell the story, so the thing did not take a swipe at me or even move closer. Thankfully, Nathan got all the proof on video. (He also said he will use the appropriate color filter next time…. so this time you are blessed with extra green).
After the dives, we headed back to our room, ate salami and gouda sandwiches on our terrace, and went down to our pool to read and relax. Nathan, of course, passed the time while enjoying a coffee.
Dinner was back to Bistro De Paris for All You Can Eat Pizza. We don’t typically go out for all-you-can-eat things, but the waitress from earlier in the week made it sound fun and appealing and she was not wrong. They have unique and fun pizzas and the cook just makes them one right after another. So it is a great opportunity to try a bunch of different kinds of pizza without committing to just one. Of course, we enjoyed the pizza with Passionfruit mojitos. Because why not?
