Not one ray, but two!

Last night was not the most restful.  We both woke up at about 2 am to a major bump and grind going on outside.  There’s no nightclubs around, so I think one of the neighbors decided to play their tunes ala Matthew McCaughey, just without the bongos.  Not sure if they were nude too, or clothed.

Whatever it was, I had my earplugs in and the racket was still bothersome.

I managed to fall back asleep and got up around 7:30. Nathan had been up and out on our porch for an hour. I was pretty groggy, and I don’t think Nathan knew I was awake.  I rubbed my eyes, and stumbled about, and like a true addict, I reached for my phone.

And down came the rain.  A true torrential downpour.  An in came Nathan.  The weather showed no sign of passing, and so we lingered inside our cabana, savored our coffee, ate breakfast and gradually the rain stopped and the sun came out.

Our still wet porch

By 10:30, we were walking into town.  First up was to stop by the bakery for real bread.  Done.  Second was to pick up meat and cheese to put on the bread, and third was to stop by the dive shop and feel them out.

Chepes beach

This place has a lot of dive shops.  Honestly, I think most of them feel more like schools for dive courses than catering to fun dives.
That’s what Nathan and I do.  Fun dives.  They are supposed to be fun. So we gave Dewey our brief dive history including all of the hand holding last year with Denzel.  And he was cool.  They take it slow.  All good. No worries.

Utila’s Main street

So we booked an afternoon dive for tomorrow. Hopefully I don’t need to hold Dewey’s hand, but if I do, he was forewarned.

Errands done, we walked back to our cabana.  Lunch on a fresh baguette is calling.

Sunny beach day

After lunch we had no plans.  Dewey had told us where to snorkel on our end of town, so that was an option.  Nathan set about raking and tidying our beach.  Sitting around on our porch swing just made me tired, so after a brief snooze, I got up and Nathan and I geared up to snorkel in front of our cabana.

It didn’t seem very promising, a little sand and a lot of sea grass was visible.   But it was hot and sunny and we needed a cooling off.

Huge ray

And wouldn’t you know it, after that sand and sea grass, there’s coral and fishes to be seen out there. We saw two rays, a huge sea cucumber, parrot fish, walnut jelly fish, fan coral, and so much more.  Who knew it was right out in front of our unassuming beach.

The sea life

We snorkeled up until 3:30, then swam in together, showered, had a cocktail on our porch before walking to dinner.
