Happy Thanksgiving to everyone from Grenada. We woke up to skies that threatened to rain, a rain soaked deck, and an invitation to Friendsgiving back in Colorado. I waited until an appropriate time of day in Colorado to send my regards and regrets.
Today’s the day. We finally will get on the dive boat with Dive Grenada. We need to show up by 12:45, and who knows what we’ll do before that.
We slowly ate breakfast and waited out the rain clouds. We left the house at 9:50, and very carefully worked our way down the steep, and now wet, driveway. We got down to the highway and a #1 bus pulled over and in we went.
Once we were at our stop, Nathan knocked to get out of the bus. We paid the conductor, and off we went down the beach.
We don’t have our tent today, so we set our things up under the shade of a tree, and went inside Dive Grenada to check in.
We had a couple hours to kill before the dive, so we read on the beach and Nathan went into the water. The waves are pretty big here today, and I’m wearing contacts for the first time in many years, so I opted to stay on dry land.
At noon, we ate our sandwiches, and checked in with the dive shop. Allie took our PADI cards, and gave us wet suits. I mostly paced around their deck and talked with other guests.
Allie checked in to make sure I wasn’t too nervous, so it seems I was unsuccessful in my bid to appear relaxed. Once everyone was ready, we all gathered up and went out to the boat.
This dive shop is the first we’ve had where there is no dock to get to the boat. You need to gather your things in either a dry bag or a mesh bag, hold them up in the air, fight the waves, as you walk out to where the boat is tied up.
The boat ride to the Flamingo Bay dive site was pretty short, but we got a view of St Georges from the water as we went by. Once at Flamingo Bay, we put our gear on and got into the water. I was a very brave girl, and didn’t even utter an “I’m scared”. I was thinking it, but I didn’t say it.
Under the water, I was mostly calm. I did have a little trouble equalizing between 15-20 feet, but eventually I got myself all sorted out.
The water here is pretty murky, but we saw tons of schools of smallish fish, a couple eels, a gigantic grouper, shrimp, and a lionfish.
Once the dive was over, we boated back to the dive shop, where we again had to battle the wave to get back on dry land.
The remainder of the afternoon was spent back under the shade of a tree. We went into the water briefly, but people were getting pretty tousled by the waves, so the safest was to stay on the sand.
At 3:45, we packed up our things, headed for the grocery store to buy more sandwich buns, and caught the bus home.
Once home, we quickly showered and got ready for Thanksgiving dinner. We have a 6 pm reservation at 61 West, a restaurant on the beach, so we need to catch another bus to go right back to where we were! This time with less sand in our ears.
