I Guess We’re Friends Now!

Sadly, all adventures must come to an end, and this is our last full day in Grenada. We got up around 6 am and leisurely ate breakfast. The plan today is to walk towards the airport and Magazine Beach. Because its so close to the airport, its not on any bus route, so to get their our options are to walk or take a cab.

We decided to walk, and its only about 40 minutes away. Immediately as we descend our street, a bus pulls over and asks if we want a ride. We tell them where we are trying to go and they quote us $10 EC each or $3.70 US each. No thanks, we’ll walk.

Immediately once the bus drives off, it starts to rain. Of course! We get out our umbrellas and continue to walk. It was my decision to turn the bus away, so I checked in with Nathan, but he’s happy as a clam to be walking in the rain, because at least now we’re not sweating our butts off.

The rain lasted only 5 minutes, so before you know it, we are sweating our butts off. We still carried our umbrellas open to keep the hot sun off our bodies, until the wind and our umbrellas had a little disagreement and we decided to put them away. At least the breezes keep the bugs at bay and dry up the sweat. That’s what we are telling each other anyway.

On the walk, above the airport and towards the beach, there was a little memorial. We walked over and wouldn’t you know, its a memorial to the fallen Cubans who died fighting during the American invasion in 1983. Its not everyday you see a memorial commemorating the fallen who died while battling the US, and we found the thing most intriguing.

While super friendly to Americans now, Grenada still has a warm and inviting relationship with Cuba. There are a few Cuban restaurants here and Cuban people living and working here legally.

After the memorial, it was just a short walk to the beach. We arrived by 10:30, set up our tent and proceeded to spend the rest of the day liming.

Liming is the unofficial national pastime in Grenada. Its the art of relaxing, chilling out, with friends, sharing food, drink and conversation.

At noon, we had our sandwiches and a drink from the nearby Aquarium restaurant.

After lunch, I snorkeled and Nathan made a new friend, who laid down beside him for a nap without so much as a peep. He has a collar on, so he belongs to somebody, and when Nathan first encountered him over by the restaurant he growled at him, so perhaps the restaurant is his territory.

By 2:30 or so, we had a farewell happy hour drink on the beach, packed up our tent, and began the walk to our place. Within a few minutes, we were picked up by a bus, and deposited at Hillcrest Drive.

Once home, we proceeded to shake sand out of our belongings, and hang things to dry so they can be packed tomorrow.

At dinnertime, we walked to One Love for dinner and sadly our favorite waitress is not working this evening. It’s probably a good thing too, because we are already tired and there’s lots of packing to do for tomorrow.
