I’m not so sure about that, at least not yet, but its as good a start to this adventure as we have for five, supremely sleep deprived individuals.
Let me take a step back. Last August, on a random Tuesday, I woke up to find the following text message: “Hey Nathan and Anika, I’m planning a sailing trip to the Bahamas, and I’m wondering if you adventurers would join my crew. Joan and the boys are going to stay at Atlantis, Nassau for a week while we sail out to the islands there. My sister Zoe and my brother in law Grant are coming along. Its March 2024. Let me know if this sounds like something you’re into!”
I sprang out of bed and ran downstairs where Nathan was working out. I breathlessly and excitedly explained the text, and he could not quite comprehend what I was so worked up about.
Fast forward 7 and a half months, and here we are in the Bahamas with Captain Dave, his brother-in-law Grant, and friend Todd. Unfortunately, Zoe had to bow out due to illness a month back.
Todd, Dave, Nathan and I flew from Denver last night on a 12:45 am to Miami, and then on to Nassau. Grant, who lives and works in Helsinki, flew from Casper, WY to Denver to Dulles and on to Nassau.
We all arrived before noon, and our hotelier arranged for a taxi to come get us at the airport and bring us across the island to our room. Darville met us at the door, showed us the ropes of our place, and once done, we all changed into shorts and Tevas and walked to a locals place for lunch.
We had heard that Bamboo Shack was the place for local cuisine and we were all game to give it a go. We walked along a busy road to the shop only to discover that it was a take out place. So we ordered our food and asked if there was a nice place nearby to take our food for a picnic. A very decisive no was the answer.
So we took our food to a nearby concrete wall and sat down to enjoy our meal while also enjoying the traffic pass by. The fare was mostly fried chicken and fish, with fries and pre-applied ketchup, and served up with the poorest excuse for a paper napkin. One star.
Once we cleaned up our greasy hands, we made our way to the local liquor store to stock up on drinks, and headed back to our place.
We took a short break in the AC to discuss boat details, and towards the end of the afternoon we left to walk to the marina to scope out the place, and to hit the local grocery store to buy supplies for dinner and breakfast.
Once dinner was over, Nathan clean up the kitchen and we were all ready for bed. Tomorrow is a big day.
